To make a simple ginger bug starter You'll require:

  • 2 cups non-chlorinated drinking water avoid the tap water containing chlorine, since it could cause harm to the process of fermentation
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger chopped keep the peel for further wild yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar organic sugar, such as cane sugar and white sugar works best

For daily meals (Days 2-7)):

  • 1 cup grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

    Step 1: Combine Ingredients

    • In a glass jar that is clean, mix sugar, water as well as grated ginger. Stir using a wooden spoon or a plastic one until it is completely dissolved.

    Step 2: Cover & Rest

    • Cover the jar in a breathable paper towel or cloth and secure it with the help of a rubber band. Set the jar in a cool spot (70-80degF) far from direct light.

    • Every 24 hours add 1 tablespoon ginger and 1 cup sugar. Stir well. Keep stirring for at least 3-7 days.

    Step 4: Look for Signs of Fermentation

    • The contents of your Ginger bug that you make at home will turn cloudy, bubbly and emit a slight sweet, yeasty smell. This indicates that fermentation by wild yeast is taking place.

    Step 5: Use as a Starter

    • Once the bubbly is gone, you can strain off liquid for use as a recipe for ginger bugs. Always keep some starters to ensure that it continues to grow and feed.

    How to Use Ginger Bug for Homemade Soda

    To make a simple fermented ginger drink:
    1. Create a sweet tea base (ginger tea, juice of fruit or an herbal tea).
    2. Allow it to cool until ambient temperature.
    3. Add 1/4to 1/2 cup of spice bug mix for each 1 quart of liquid.
    4. Then, place the bottle in airtight containers. Place in a cool, dry place for a couple of days to carbonate.
    5. Cool before serving and opening.
